1. Privacy-Minimizing Architecture
Halal Core is built around strict data minimization principles. The application operates without requiring personal identity information:
- No user accounts: You do not need to create an account, register, or provide an email or password to use Halal Core.
- No advertising SDKs: The app contains no third-party mobile advertising SDKs, display ad networks, or sponsored trackers.
- No behavioral tracking: We do not track your habits, actions, or browsing behavior across apps or external websites.
- No dedicated analytics SDKs: No third-party behavioral analytics SDKs are embedded in the app.
- No user profiling: We do not construct consumer profiles, personal dossiers, or demographic segments.
- No selling of data: Personal data is never sold, leased, or monetized.
- No data brokers: We do not exchange, share, or disclose data to commercial data brokers.
- No personal identity collection: The app does not intentionally collect names, email addresses, phone numbers, contact lists, precise geolocation, financial credentials, or government identity numbers.
- No hidden background collection: Data transmission occurs only in direct response to user-initiated functional actions, such as scanning a barcode or submitting an ingredient photo.
2. Functional Processing Only
Halal Core processes data exclusively to provide core scanning and ingredient-evaluation functionality:
-
Barcode Lookup: When you scan a product barcode, the barcode identifier is sent over HTTPS to supported public product databases (such as Open Food Facts and, where applicable, Open Beauty Facts) to retrieve publicly available product titles, brands, and ingredient lists.
-
Ingredient Photo OCR: When you choose to photograph an ingredient label:
- The captured image is processed solely for optical character recognition (OCR) and text extraction;
- The request is routed through the Halal Core secure Cloudflare Worker proxy;
- The OCR request is then forwarded by the proxy to the external OCR provider (OCR.space);
- OCR API credentials remain server-side within the Cloudflare Worker and are never embedded, exposed, or accessible within the mobile app binary; and
- The sole purpose of this transmission is to extract readable text so Halal Core can perform the ingredient assessment.
-
Ingredient Analysis: Extracted ingredient text is evaluated by Halal Core to help classify ingredients into one of four functional categories:
- Likely suitable
- Review needed / Mashbooh
- May not be suitable / Haram
- Incomplete information
Ingredient scan data is evaluated strictly in real time for this review. No advertising, commercial profiling, or behavioral use is made of your ingredient scan inputs.
3. Device Permissions
Halal Core requests only the device permissions strictly necessary to deliver its features:
- Camera: Used exclusively when you choose to scan barcodes or photograph ingredient labels. Camera streams are analyzed for barcode detection and image capture; video feeds are not recorded or streamed externally.
- Photo Library: Used only if the app version permits selecting an existing ingredient label photo from your device storage for OCR text analysis.
- Internet / Network: Required to query public product databases for barcode data and communicate with the secure Cloudflare Worker proxy for OCR ingredient extraction.
The app does not request access to contacts, location sensors, microphones, calendars, health data, or local files outside user-selected images.
4. Third-Party Services
We disclose only the third-party infrastructure and services actually used to fulfill functional requests:
-
Cloudflare Workers: Serves as a secure serverless reverse proxy. It isolates secret OCR API credentials server-side away from client devices and routes OCR requests securely. Review the Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
-
OCR.space (a9t9 software GmbH): Receives ingredient label images via the secure Cloudflare Worker proxy over HTTPS to perform text extraction and returns parsed ingredient text. Review the OCR.space Privacy Policy.
-
Open Food Facts: A non-profit, collaborative database queried with barcode numbers to retrieve public food ingredient data. Review the Open Food Facts Website.
-
Open Beauty Facts: Queried with barcode numbers where applicable to retrieve public cosmetic and personal care ingredient records.
5. Data Retention
Halal Core itself does not maintain user profiles, accounts, or persistent scanning histories on external servers:
- Ingredient images and OCR queries are processed transiently in real time as required to return the scan result.
- Temporary local image caches created by the device operating system during camera capture are managed by local operating system cleanup mechanisms.
- Third-party service providers (such as Cloudflare, OCR.space, and Open Food Facts) operate their own infrastructure and manage routine network, diagnostic, or security server logs under their own operational policies. We do not make absolute statements regarding third-party infrastructure retention beyond their published documentation.
- Support correspondence: If you email support, your message and email address are retained only as long as reasonably required to address your inquiry and fulfill legitimate administrative records.
6. Security Measures
We apply sensible technical safeguards to safeguard data during processing:
- Transport Security: All data transmissions between the Halal Core app, the Cloudflare Worker proxy, and third-party APIs use HTTPS encryption.
- Server-Side Credential Isolation: Sensitive third-party API keys are stored in secure environment secrets on Cloudflare Workers and are never compiled into or distributed with the client mobile application.
- Data Minimization: By eliminating accounts, identifiers, and advertising trackers, the attack surface and potential privacy impact are substantially reduced.
Please note that no method of electronic storage or transmission over the public internet can be stated as completely impenetrable. Users are encouraged to maintain up-to-date device operating systems and security settings.
7. Children’s Privacy
Halal Core is designed for general audiences and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age in your jurisdiction). The app does not require registration, personal accounts, or profile creation. If a parent or legal guardian believes that a child has submitted personal information through support correspondence, please contact us so we can review and promptly remove that information. Halal Core does not claim COPPA certification.
8. Halal Assessment Disclaimer
Halal Core provides ingredient-information assistance to help users read and understand product labels. Halal Core is not a religious certification authority or Islamic ruling body.
Ingredient information from public databases or OCR label extraction may be incomplete, outdated, or misread due to image quality or packaging variations. Furthermore, manufacturing methods, supplier sources, and cross-contact risks may change without notice.
Users are strongly advised to inspect original physical product packaging and verify official Halal certification marks or contact manufacturers directly whenever authoritative confirmation is required.
9. International Processing
Because cloud infrastructure (Cloudflare), optical character recognition (OCR.space), and open databases (Open Food Facts) operate globally distributed servers, functional requests may be processed outside your home country or region. Data protection regulations in these locations may differ from those in your jurisdiction.
10. User Choices and Control
You retain complete control over device permissions and app usage:
- You can grant, deny, or revoke Camera or Photo Library permissions at any time in your device operating system settings.
- Because Halal Core does not create personal user accounts or store cloud profiles, there is no separate account deletion workflow. Simply removing the app removes locally stored app preferences.
- For inquiries regarding support emails or communications, contact us at the address below.
11. Policy Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in app capabilities, service integrations, or legal obligations. The revised version will be published on this page with an updated “Last updated” date. We encourage users to check this page periodically for updates.
